Supporting a Small Business and Running Yours with Joy
As a small business owner, I know firsthand how challenging—and rewarding—it can be. Since give with joy started in 2012, I've seen the ups and downs of building something meaningful, but at the heart of it all is a passion for creating and inspiring joy. It hasn’t always been easy, but it’s always been worth it.
Over the years, GWJ has grown—sometimes slowly, sometimes unexpectedly—but always with heart. From my childhood dreams to the designs I share today, creating has always been part of me. I’ve juggled my business alongside full-time jobs, raising kids, and running a home. At one point, I almost walked away. But here I am, in a new season with more time to pour into what I love, and I’m so grateful for the support that has made it all possible.
Now, GWJ is in over 50 shops nationwide, and even more meaningful? The hundreds (maybe thousands!) of cards and gifts you’ve sent to the people in your life, helping to spread joy in ways I could never have imagined.
So, how can we continue to support each other as small business owners and customers? Here are 4 ways to support a small business and 4 ways to keep your small business running with joy:
4 Ways to Support a Small Business:
Shop Local: Every purchase makes a real difference. Whether it’s a product you need or something you love, your support keeps small businesses thriving. It’s more than just a transaction—it’s an investment in something meaningful.
Spread the Word: Word of mouth is one of the most powerful tools for small businesses. If you love a product, share it with your friends, family, or followers. Let people know what makes your favorite small businesses special.
Leave a Review: A positive review can mean the world to a small business. It’s a simple yet impactful way to show appreciation and help others discover great products. It takes just a few minutes and can make a lasting impact.
Engage with Brands: Like, comment, or share posts from small businesses. Engagement is a way to show support that doesn’t always involve spending money but still helps amplify their reach. Even a quick like or a share goes a long way.
4 Ways to Keep Your Small Business Running with Joy:
Prioritize Self-Care: Running a small business is demanding, so taking time for yourself is essential. A refreshed mind and body help keep your passion alive. Don’t forget to rest and recharge; your business will thank you for it.
Build Strong Connections: Whether with customers, collaborators, or fellow small business owners, building strong, authentic relationships is key. These connections create a sense of community and make the journey that much more fulfilling.
Make Your Customers Feel Like VIPs: Loyalty isn’t just about discounts—it’s about making people feel valued. One way I do this is through my "close friends" group on Instagram, where I offer first dibs on new items at a special discounted price. It’s a fun way to give my most loyal customers exclusive access before products go live for everyone else.
I also love adding handwritten notes to orders—it’s a small touch, but it turns a simple package into something personal. And every so often, I like to tuck in a little freebie as a surprise thank-you. These little gestures are my way of saying, I see you. I appreciate you. You matter. Because at the end of the day, it’s not just about selling—it’s about building real connections.
Celebrate Small Wins: Every step forward, no matter how small, is worth celebrating. Milestones like a big order or a successful product launch are moments to savor. These celebrations remind you why you started in the first place and fuel your drive for the road ahead.
The heart of GWJ remains the same:
To inspire joy
To strengthen relationships
To help savor the sweet moments
None of this happens without you. Every order, every card sent, and every moment you’ve made a little brighter is something I’m incredibly grateful for. It’s not just about what’s sold—it’s about the connections we create together.
Thank you for being part of this journey. Whether you're shopping with small businesses or running your own, your impact is immeasurable. Here’s to more joy ahead!
with joy,
