Writing Tips: Thank You Cards & Gratitude

I have heard others say, “Oh, I don’t need a thank you card.”

I get it. I don’t need a card in the mail thanking me for the gifts. I don’t give for that reason, but it’s nice to receive a note of gratitude because that can grow your relationship and connect with that person.

Whether you choose to thank the giver with a card, a text or a phone call, here are my tips to a more personal message of gratitude.

  • Don’t focus on what they gave you, but how it made you feel or how you’ll enjoy the gift. Focus on the relationships rather than the gift. The gift was given because of a relationship.

  • Always make the effort to let them know you receive the card/gift if you didn’t open it with them. I try to call or FaceTime the gift giver, so they can be part of the joy of giving gifts. I do the same with my children so they can learn how to express gratitude.

  • Send a card in the mail expressing how thankful you have that person in your life. Include a photo of them and you for added fun,

  • Don’t wait for a reason to show your gratitude. Pause to consider the people in your life who check in on you, provide you with wisdom and support, cheer you on. Simply thank them for being there for you as a friend.

Now, here are a few things you can borrow for your cards or use as a jumping off point.

  • “Thank you for the carefully curated and beautiful gift. Makes me feel so loved knowing you paused to consider me. What a joy it is to have a thoughtful friend like you.”

  • “Your words mean so much to me. Thank you for taking time to remind me of my strengths during this season of life. Your words filled me up.”

  • “I can’t believe you remembered how much I loved that shirt, and then you surprised me with it. Your love is so generous in deed and words. Lucky me to have a friend like you who celebrates others so thoughtfully.”

  • If you have children, sit down with them while you write thank yous. Ask them questions like: what do you love about the gift and the person, how does this person make you feel, what are thankful for. Questions like these will allow them to learn how to express their gratitude.
